Make Sure Your Motorcycle Is Ready

Even high quality and well-maintained motorcycles wear down over time and experience issues. It'd be a shame for a preventable problem to creep up during a long distance motorcycle ride! That's why a pre-trip inspection is key.

Look over the various parts and systems on your motorcycle, from the fluids to the lights to the brakes. It's much better to uncover a problem in your driveway then in the middle of a touring trip! If you notice anything unusual, schedule a service department visit as soon as possible. Get it fixed before your trip departure date.

Build Your Route

When planning your long distance motorcycle trip, there are a few key things to keep in mind.

Your Endurance

Motorcycle riding is a physically taxing activity. Be realistic about the length of trip your body can handle. Be sure to also take frequent breaks, which helps you maintain your focus.

The Gas Tank

You don't want to suddenly realize you are almost empty...and the nearest gas station is an hour away. Plan out refueling stops, especially if you are visiting more rural routes where gas stations are less common.

Pack Strategically

It's tempting to want to bring items "just in case". But there is only so much storage space available on a motorcycle. You'll have to be selective about the items you pack.

Start with the essentials: a first aid kit for medical emergencies, a toolkit for maintenance issues, water, and snacks. If you are staying somewhere overnight, bring toiletries, any medications you take, and clothing.  

You won't need much beyond this basic list. Plus, there is likely going to be a grocery store or two on your route. If you end up needing that one item, you can always swing by a store to grab it.
